Homemade cake donuts

These donuts are in no way healthy, which is why Dave and I make them so infrequently. They taste wonderful though, so go ahead and treat yourself once in awhile.
Homemade cake donuts
oil
2 cups self-rising flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
2 tablespoons melted butter
1/2 cup milk
1 egg
powdered sugar
Pour about 2 inches of oil into a heavy saucepan. Carefully heat on high heat until a small drop of dough dropped into the oil sizzles.
Meanwhile, whisk together the flour, 1/2-cup sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. In a separate bowl, whisk together the melted butter, milk, and the egg. Pour the egg mixture into the flour mixture. Stir together lightly, and then turn out onto a lightly floured bowl, and knead several times. Roll or pat the dough to about 1/2-inch thick. Use a small round cutter to cut the dough into shapes. Drop the dough circles into the hot oil. Fry 3-4 donuts at a time, turning once, until they are light brown – about 3 minutes. Drain on paper towels. Roll while still warm in powdered sugar. Makes 12-14 donuts.

Love doughnuts … and like yours because they haven’t been deep fried. Maybe I should have a go on this too.
Oh, these are most definitely fried. They aren’t very healthy as a result. This is why Dave and I only make them once a year. I wonder though, if we can’t experiment with a BAKED donut that is almost as tasty. Thank you for giving us the incentive.
When I visit New Orleans .. I had Beignet everyday at Cafe du Monde – lovely … but it’s the deep frying that keep me away from them otherwise. Baked donuts??? I leave that up to you. *smile
Beignets are also delicious. I’ve made those before, and they are a little more complicated, but worth the effort. Of course, they’re also terribly unhealthy, especially with all of the honey and powdered sugar that one feels compelled to consume with them.
They are also good rolled in a granulated sugar-cinnamon mixture
You are so right. I have made these with cinnamon sugar in the past, and they are indeed wonderful that way.
How sinfully good!
So true. Alas…so unhealthy, they are such a rare treat.
They sound very good. I’ll make some!
They’re fun to make, but be very careful with the hot oil.
