Goings on at the farm…

I just finished a big bowl of ham and navy bean soup. I know, I know…I shared the recipe for ham and bean soup with you already. Last night the weatherman said it would be cold today, so I put some beans to soak, and got out a pound of frozen ham, threw in a bunch of seasonings, and then this morning started everything on low in the crockpot. Thanks to a new rif on the seasonings, they were so much zippier than before (note to self: adding a heaping teaspoon of red pepper flakes is a pretty darn good idea).
Meanwhile, today dawned cold and rainy, which is exactly what we need. The duckpond, which was so low we were starting to lose fish, is finally beginning to fill. It’s not nearly at its usual water level, but our koi will survive the winter. We lost several huge koi earlier this year…it was sad because some of our koi are 2-3 feet long. This summer, that duckpond is going to be getting some bulldozing to open it up a little. We might even install a bigger dock as well…it would be nice to have a dock wide enough for a table and a few chairs. I have this little vision of eating outside over the water.
