Cold shrimp and spicy cocktail sauce

One of our favorite snacks is cold boiled shrimp with spicy cocktail sauce.  After Dave’s Cajun seafood boil recently, we had a few extra shrimp (we intentionally cooked extra just so we could have them cold the next day).  We never buy cocktail sauce from the grocery store.  We can make a much tastier version better ourselves, and it tastes fresher.

Spicy cocktail sauce

Juice of half a lemon

1 cup ketchup (Hunts brand has no high fructose corn syrup)

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon pepper sauce (we use Texas Pete’s original hot sauce)

dash celery salt

2-3 tablespoons prepared horseradish sauce

Stir together,  adding extra horseradish or pepper sauce if you like things a little zippier (we always lean toward spicier in our household).  Serve alongside cold boiled shrimp.

By the way, do you know that if you add a tiny amount of vinegar to the cooking water when you’re making cold boiled shrimp, they will peel more easily?  Just a few tablespoons will do the trick.
