Dave, Otis, and Sophie…and the tree

May 30, 2012 § 5 Comments

Recently, while working in the kitchen, I looked out the window to see Dave surveying the property with Otis and Sophie.  Thinking about how best to tackle a tree that was hit by lightning this past winter, Dave was wondering how much of that tree could be used for firewood in the coming year.  We don’t light many fires in the fireplace (maybe 2-3 per year), and so most firewood goes to waste.  In the summer and fall, we like to light a fire a few times per season per year in our firepit, and then roast a few marshmallows.

Our firewood is already stacked high, and we regularly give away pieces to our friends with fireplaces.  The tree that was felled will make for an enormous firewood pile.  We worked for several hours this past weekend, cutting it into pieces, and then stacking the logs.  We still have a huge bit of tree remaining…I don’t suppose any Gulf residents would like some free firewood?
