Killdeer nest at the barn

June 27, 2012 § 10 Comments

We live a few miles from the Gulf Coast, and so we see many sea birds at our little farm.  In addition to the occasional Roseate Spoonbills, pelicans, seagulls, and herons of all types, we also have little Killdeer.  These friendly plovers are shore birds, and are typically found on the beach.  They’re fast runners, and speed around the yard on little stick legs.  They usually lay eggs on the shore…or in our case, they lay eggs in the middle of the gravel driveway that leads to our barn.

Fortunately, Dave saw the nest, and has taken care to make sure that we don’t inadvertently destroy it with a car or the tractor.  Here’s another picture, this time I’m standing above her.  She actually wasn’t nervous at all about me standing around her.  I didn’t want to press my luck though, so I quickly took the picture and then left her alone.

What a wonderful little bird … and that is her on the nest .. in the gravel- Amazing. What about the cats and the dogs ???? Sweet post, thank you!

The cats haven’t seen her (hopefully they never will), and the dogs can’t get to her because we keep them on leashes on that part of our property.

Hopefully the cats … will not notice her – hard to protect her.
Wonderful little bird – strange place to nest – you would think she would hide a bit more – but she melts in well with the gravel.
        Keep us posted !

  • How lovely! Even though our garden is quite small we are lucky to have lots of birds visiting. I heard a quiet smashing noise outside this afternoon, it was a song thrush smashing a snail’s shell to pieces, was nice to see nature doing it’s thing but a bit gruesome at the same time. Fingers crossed the cats don’t spot her.

Our bird’s probably safe, as the cats prefer to be near the house (where the food dishes are kept). What excitement concerning the song thrush in your own garden…I can’t imagine what that must have sounded like.
