Killdeer nest at the barn

We live a few miles from the Gulf Coast, and so we see many sea birds at our little farm. In addition to the occasional Roseate Spoonbills, pelicans, seagulls, and herons of all types, we also have little Killdeer. These friendly plovers are shore birds, and are typically found on the beach. They’re fast runners, and speed around the yard on little stick legs. They usually lay eggs on the shore…or in our case, they lay eggs in the middle of the gravel driveway that leads to our barn.
Fortunately, Dave saw the nest, and has taken care to make sure that we don’t inadvertently destroy it with a car or the tractor. Here’s another picture, this time I’m standing above her. She actually wasn’t nervous at all about me standing around her. I didn’t want to press my luck though, so I quickly took the picture and then left her alone.
