Ring of mushrooms

July 18, 2012 § 1 Comment

Over the past few years, this property has lost many trees.  Those that weren’t destroyed by Hurricane Ike were killed later by the serious drought we experienced.  The pine trees in particular were damaged.  Weakened by the lack of sufficient rain, the trees were weak and unable to defend themselves from the pine borer beetles.  We lost three huge pines near the barn, and three more pines along the East side of the house.

We’ve only just recently emerged from the drought, and have gradually been been replanting trees to replace those that were lost.  In the meantime, the stumps of the felled trees have evolved into their own little eco-systems, supporting small beetles and plant life.

I was out recently with Otis, and we noticed this little ring of mushrooms, growing in the stump of a fallen pine tree.

With the recent heavy rains in our area, we have many mushrooms.  These growing in the stump are the first I’ve seen of their kind.
