Being thankful for family and hamburgers for Thanksgiving

November 21, 2012 § 13 Comments

As I sit here in Australia, in a hospital room with my ailing uncle, I’m grateful for my family.  My uncle is very sick, and this will likely be his last Thanksgiving.  We were planning a big celebration, with friends coming in from the surrounding communities to celebrate an American Thanksgiving in Australia.

My uncle has been looking forward to seeing old friends, but we had to cancel the event.  We’re going to reschedule for next week, when my uncle is a little stronger.  Even though things are a little sad here, my aunt and are…

– grateful that my uncle is still here with us;

– grateful that I can be here to help. even though Dave and the rest of the family cannot be here;

– grateful that SKYPE works from a hospital bed, so Dave, Mike, and Lars can say hello to our uncle;

– grateful that I can be here to take care of my aunt when my uncle is so sick;

– grateful that people actually read this blog, and send us supportive messages;

– and lastly, grateful that maybe my uncle <might> get to come home on Thursday.  His doctor tells us that he is working hard to stabilize my uncle so he can come home and rest comfortably in his own bed, in the place that he loves.   So, keep your fingers crossed for us.

I asked my uncle what he would like to eat for his first dinner at home, after over a week in the hospital.  He said “hamburgers!”, so that is what we are having for Thanksgiving dinner.  I might try to make the hamburgers in the shape of little turkeys, and I’m definitely going to make us some sweet potato fries to go alongside.

In the meantime, what are you grateful for this year?  Maybe you aren’t American, and so don’t celebrate an American Thanksgiving.  But, what are you grateful for in your lives?  Is it family and friends, healthy and happy children, your own health?  Is there someone in your life that is special, who might not be here much longer?

    I’m grateful for that my mum – is so crystal clear in her head and that she are still around, 90 … so THANKFUL for that I have got a second chance on life after my cancer removal and treatments – and for my friends here at home and around the world.

    So happy that your uncle are on his way home .. and for the party next week. Enjoy the hamburgers.

      I’m so glad that you still have your mum with you. You are very fortunate, and she is lucky to have you. And I’m also glad that you have had a second chance at life.

        Yes, but when they told me about the tumor – I never thought about it that I wouldn’t come through it. Wasn’t worried a bit – I put my faith into the doctors and the hospital, all I could think about was to be free from my hip pains. Strange how we react to things.

        Maybe your positive attitude has something to do with your recovery.

        Of course it has specially now .. when it’s all over – but the recovery in itself was all down to hospital staff and treatments.

    Libby, it sounds like it’s been a hard time for your uncle and your family, and I’m glad to hear that he stands a good chance of being home with you all, and in his own home, for Thanksgiving. It’s so good that you can be there. If anyone can do turkey-shaped burgers, I bet it’s you!

    I’m grateful every day for so many things, including current good health and being able to be here so much for my children, but a heart-wrenching real life story I just had the chance to read (a photo of mine is illustrating it) made me ever so grateful that I’m not having to raise my children in a warzone.

    • Libby says:

      Having lived in a war zone myself, I can relate to your story about raising children in such an environment. Your own children are so fortunate to live in a safe place, and have you able to provide for their needs.

  • Olga says:

    Happy Thanksgiving, Libby! You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

    I am grateful for my mom – her love, support, warmth and encouragement. Hope she come back soon; I miss her terribly…

  • Lisa says:

    Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family! I know those are going to be the best hamburgers ever!
    I am grateful for my family and for friends like you!
